Now to be perfectly honest, I didn't come up with it. He actually did on the fateful evening when he became part of the fabric of American lore. While he was on the plane awaiting his demands being me, he was smoking Raleigh cigarettes and had himself two or three cocktail. Now keep in mind this was 1971. Smoking on planes was commonplace, often with a cocktail in hand. This was the hey-dey of glamorous jet travel and the man who called himself Dan Cooper was dressed in a sharp black suit with matching tie and sunglasses. So what did he drink on the plane before he took his nighttime leap?
Very simply put, he had a Bourbon and 7-up over ice. That's it. Nothing fancy. I was at the Yankee game last night and since I haven't had an alcoholic cocktail in a while I said why not. I ordered myself a Jim Beam and Lemon/Lime soda. Unfortunately 7-up wasn't an option. So Starry would have to do. What did I think of it?I like Bourbon. So I didn't have an issue with the cocktail. The only thing was that since I was diagnosed with Diabetes last July, I have severely cut my sugar intake. Especially with the elimination of sugary carbonated drinks. I found it to be overly sweet. Especially as I got closer to the bottom. But I highly recommend it if you want a simple refreshing Bourbon cocktail. If you want something spicier, then swap the Bourbon for Rye Whiskey.
Have any of you had this cocktail wither with Bourbon or Rye Whiskey? What did you think. Let me know in the comments box.
